Far Eastern scientists and representatives of the Primorsky region Administration joined efforts to solve environmental problem. Raising of Khanka lake water level leads to the flooding of 11 villages of Khankaisky, Khorolsky and Spassky regions. At present, water is being pumped from the lake constantly. And specialists are trying to figure out reasons of this abnormal phenomenon.

Within five years, water level in the largest lake in the Far East rose for almost one and a half meter.

In recent years, Khanka Lake literally swallows up the shore. The lake is getting closer and closer to the populated places. Last year, the water level reached its peak. This penomenon in combination with storms led to the destruction of the shoreline, flooding of a number of villages. Rear species of Khanka reserved area are also under the impact. Citizens of Novokachalinsk village are trying to harness shoreline themselves.

At present, processes that are taking place in Khanka lake are unpredictable, Primorsky and Khabarovsky regions scientists decided to join their efforts. Unified database, collected by Russian and Chinese specialists may help to study the phenomenon of trans-border lake.

Yuri Zhuravlev, director of Institute of Biology and Soil Science, Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences says: "Some of the data is available to us, and part of the data is available to Chinese specialists, but at present we don’t have an opportunity to compare the data. In October a meeting with Chinese specialists will be held and we will be able to compare our information. "
